Keyword research and selection can be both difficult and time-consuming. You need to do some research to determine the set of words that will work very well for your website. This article covers some basic tips in selecting keywords:
- You need to know the right set of terms that will drive your target market to your site. Getting thousands of visitors who do not convert into customers will mean nothing against hundreds of people who buy your product and/or avail of your services.
- Determine which search terms other people use when looking for something online. Ask what they would enter into search engines when they need information about web design for small and medium-sized businesses, for instance.
- Online help is available in the form of keyword research tools. These provide lists of popular search terms related to a particular topic. By using a keyword research tool, you will also know how often each search term is used.
- Do not use single-word terms since these are usually too broad, too popular, and very competitive. Choose key phrases or two- and three-word terms. These can still bring a lot of potential customers to your website.
- Make sure to do some keyword research on a regular basis so your site stays up-to-date.
If you do not optimize your website with popular and relevant keywords, it will be very difficult to get decent traffic. Choose your keywords wisely. With enough research, you will be able to improve site traffic and ranking in search engines.
